Poeta y dramaturgo británico. Nacido en una antigua familia empobrecida de Devonshire, Gay fue aprendiz de un sedero en Londres, pero pronto fue despedido. Poco tiempo después fue uno de los fundadores del periódico The British Apollo. Entre sus colecciones poéticas están Rural Sports (1713) y Trivia (1716). Es más conocido por su ópera de baladas La ópera del mendigo (1728), la que tuvo 62 funciones (el récord hasta entonces). La obra, con música de John C. Pepusch (1667–1752), era un cuento cínico sobre ladrones y bandoleros, destinado a reflejar la degradación moral de la sociedad. Su éxito la convirtió en un hito histórico del teatro musical. Fue adaptada por Bertolt Brecht y Kurt Weill como La ópera de tres centavos (1928). Gay fue sepultado en la abadía de Westminster.
